Dr. Spivak is a Fellow of the Standards Engineering Society (North America), a Chartered Textile Technologist and Fellow of The Textile Institute (CText, FTI), and Honorary Member of ASTM International. He served four terms on the Board of Directors of the American national Standards Institute (ANSI), and for a decade chaired the ANSI-CPSC coordinating committee and voluntary standards forum with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission. From 1991-1995 he was chairman of the International Organization for Standardization’s Consumer Policy Committee (known as ISO/COPOLCO) and has appeared often in the ISO Bulletin. Steven Spivak is the author of 80 scientific-technical publications and over 200 other trade press articles on fiber and textile science, consumer product standards, fabrics, clothing and furnishings flammability, and on standardization policy, practices and education. His most recent book by S. M. Spivak and F. C. Brenner is Standardization Essentials: Principles and Practice, published in 2001 by Marcel Dekker [see www.dekker.com]. He remains active with many trade associations, professional and technical societies including ASCR and the ASCR Foundation (www.ascr.org), ASTM International, ANSI, NASFM’s Science Advisory Committee, SFPE, ISO and others.
